Soreption: Deterioration of minds

28/04/10  ||  Lord K Philipson

Soreption are pissed. They don’t think it’s fair that a band like Necrophagist get all the praise in the metal media. First off, they too (hopefully) know that Necrophagist main-douchebag Douchehammed is a fucken cunt. Secondly they believe they can offer something to every tech-death fan that will still their hunger while waiting for the next album from whatever fave tech-death band you might have. Soreption want to be on your list of said fave bands. I applaud them for it and believe they have a good chance of making that happen with the shitty titled debut full-length “Deterioration of minds”.

Apart from the obvious Necrophagist comparison (all technical death metal bands of today get compared to those cunts, you know), it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that these chicks also remind me quite a bit of fellow countrymen Aeon (the closed hi-hat in the blasts must fuck off from both bands, by the way) even more-so than the obvious Necrophagist-influence – but I find Soreption more technical than their Swedish colleagues and Soreption also borrow inspiration from Decapitated and the likes, making their sound a nice mixture of all things tricky and brutal (Aeon sounds a little more Americanized). Besides that, Soreption’s got themselves some nice solos incorporated – most of the times more reminiscent of something that Fredrik Thordendal (Meshuggah) would pull off than, let’s say, Eddie Van Halen. Simply put – these guys got their shit nailed to the cross.

There are 2 variables in the tech-death genre for me. One is the style that a band like the-recently-reviewed-here-at-GD Syn:drom (and their 6 million American cronies) do. That is not what I am into, to be Frank Mullen with you. Then we have the Necrophagist thing where catchy riffs alongside fantastic brutality is the new black. That is the kind of shit that gets my penis swingin’ in the rain. Soreption belong to the latter more often than not, thank fuck.

These Swedes don’t sound like Necrophagist as much as one would think thanx to my references in here, but they should appeal to the same audience. They have, as mentioned, drawn influences from the best in the genre and managed to create something that reeks of professionalism, Pro-Tools, triggers and ultimately – nice fucken music.

The tech-death phenomenon leaves no room for error or soul. It’s all about technical (duh) riffs and arrangements, not to mention the quantized-to-hell drums and cleaned up stop’s and go’s. But if you are into this genre it’s hardly becoz you wanna hear soulful playing or actual human groove; no – you expect precision and impressive musicianship. And that is exactly what you get with Soreption. You also get some real killing tunes so there is no reason for you to not check this out if you fancy technical death metal. I’m sure we’ll hear more of these guys shortly if there’s any justice in this world. I look forward to it.

It just caught me… There should be a tour with Soreption, Aeon, Necrophagist and Decapitated. I am of the firm belief that the world would see the most gigantic and synchronized circle jerk ever over each others’ material backstage.

Last off I have to hand out a huge fucken thumbs up for the fantastic middle part of album closer “March of the tyrants”. I don’t think anyone saw that coming. More of that on the next recording and I will have no choice but to raise the current grade a notch.
